FLOATING DEADLY
We swam through the icy spring water
though adults told it was
too soon, too cold, too reckless.
In our rebellion,
we pretended we were warm
as our feet stirred up drowned leaves
that floated across the surface...
We swam beneath them;
a canopy of puzzle pieces
that sacrificed themselves...
or were they murdered?
Each one seems to be crying out to me now...
But they are only dreams,
Only leaves,
And they cannot confess their sins
or their sorrows.
