Poppy Z. Brite is my favorite author!
I first heard of Poppy Z. Brite (just as Caitlin R. Kiernan did) in a vampire themed issue of Fangoria in 1992; back when I had a subscription to that darling monster magazine. I went to Briarwood Mall with my cousins the day after Thanksgiving that year & found her new vampire novel "Lost Souls", & waited excitedly until I could get get home to read it. Everyone who knew me thought I was merely excited about a new vampire novel, but what they didn't know is that the Fangoria article had hinted that some of the characters were gay, which was in fact why I wanted the book.
"Lost Souls" and the rest of Poppy's fiction turned out to be more than I ever expected or hoped for. Her visions have been goth & poetic, disturbing & uncompromising, sexual and sweet. What more could you ask for?
