Everybody cleared out? You've been warned. Ok. Here we go.
One of the things I love most about the new Battlestar Galactica is how enjoyable it is to
rewatch the series. As much fun as it is to watch it the first time through when all the plot
twists are unknown, in many ways it's even more enjoyable to go back and see those plot
twists unfold. Things you find out about the characters later in the series changes the way
you see certain scenes or character traits from the start. And certain revelations from the
final installments of Battlestar Galactica completely change the way the beginning can be
viewed.
Revelations.
Boomer:
I think Boomer is the most tragic character in series that's filled with them. Her journey is
one that's filled with contradictions and sorrow.
Kara Thrace's Destiny:
Knowing Kara's destiny changes the way certain scenes are perceived. The first encounter
between Leoben & Kara in "Flesh and Bone" takes on even more significance. And the initial
appearance of the mandala in "Valley of Darkness", originally just an oddity, becomes
extremely powerful. The music of Starbuck's father (also heard in "Valley of Darkness") is
also more powerful after the reveal in Season 4's "Someone To Watch Over Me".
Kara Thrace's Death:
She really did die. Everything after that is nothing but a Ghost / Angel / Avatar of Kara
allowed to complete her destiny. This will definitely change the way I view her final
appearance in "Maelstrom". The first time I saw that episode, I already knew she was
coming back in some form. Now that I understand (to some degree) what that form is,
her death is even more moving.
Kara/Lee & Kara/Sam:
I was always a Kara / Lee shipper. Seeing the flashbacks in the finale I was struck by the
knowledge that Kara & Lee were never meant to be, but were trapped in a cycle of longing
that they were never able to fully escape from. I completely accept that fact now, and I
also accept that Kara / Sam are the real deal. When rewatching the series this understanding
will change the way I interpret certain scenes involving these three characters.
The Final Five:
We know who the Final Five are. We know they are among us. We know why they don't
remember who they really are, & how they got there, & that in many ways they are victims
of the same cabal that saw the destruction of the 12 colonies. We also know that they are
not called the Final Five because they are models 8-12, but were in fact the final five survivors
from the 13th Colony on Earth. Knowing all this changes our perceptions of these characters
and their relationships.
---original post---
For instance, when you watch Battlestar Galactica a 2nd time (after seeing the complete series)
you know that Saul Tigh, Galen Tyrol, Leoben Conoy (Two), Aaron Doral (Five), Sharon
Valeri (Eight), Ellen Tigh, Samuel Anders, Simon (Four), D'Anna Biers (Three), Tory Foster
& Brother Cavil (One) are all Cylons. You know that Admiral Cain is probably a lesbian; you know
that Felix Gaeta, Gina Inviere, D'Anna & Caprica Six are probably bisexual; and you know that
Louis Hoshi is probably gay. You know Anders & Kara, Lee & Dualla, Cally & Tyrol will marry.
You know that Nick is Hot Dog's son. You know that Earth isn't the answer. You know that the
13th tribe were all Cylons. You know who lives and who dies and why. You know what Gaius
whispered to Gaeta. All of this information makes certain performances all the more memorable
the 2nd time around.
Knowing these kinds of revelations about somewhat minor characters makes them pop out of
the woodwork in episodes that I hadn't noticed them before. Knowing that Louis Hoshi becomes
involved with Gaeta really made that character stand out for me, which was really interesting as
he actually appears in 14 episodes before it's revealed that he's coupled with Felix.
Knowing that Stewart Jaffee dies in "The Oath" makes his brief appearance in the mostly forgettable
episode "A Day in the Life" take on new meaning. Other characters that die throughout the series
are studied more closely.
I'm writing this page, not even having seen the final 7 episodes; 8 including "The Plan" which is
sure to shed even more light on the early episodes.
