TORCHWOOD: CHILDREN OF EARTH (SERIES 3 - SPRING 2009)
In Doctor Who Magazine #396, Russell T. Davies confirms that scripts are coming
in from a number of different writers for Torchwood's third season. The production
team are working on the series, which is still unofficially confirmed, with filming set to
start later this summer. A new producer for the show has been appointed, in the
absence of Richard Stokes.
"Scripts for Season 3 are currently being developed and filming should start in the middle
of August for airing on BBC1 in the spring of 2009. Best news of all, John Barrowman will
return as the dashing bi-sexual adventurer. Though keeping more details close to the vest,
executive producer Julie Gardner vows that fans 'will be pleased with the casting'. Fans may
not be so happy with the mere five hours slated for next season. 'We've decided to do a five-
part mini-series, one big story that will run during one week,' says Gardner, adding, 'I wanted
to make a really big noise about the show.' So far, the BBC has only green lit these 5 hours,
but there could be more, we're told. When (or even whether) BBC America will run the
mini-series has yet to be decided." - Ileane Rudolph, TV Guide Dot Com
"As you know plans for a third series have been underway for a long time, and we now have
a new producer and a new director in place, as well as brand new scripts all ready to go. It's
the longest and most ambitious story we have ever made, so be prepared for some shocks and
surprises! Life at Torchwood is never quiet or easy, and the whole of Captain Jack's world is
about to be turned upside down!" - Julie Gardner.
It's possible this mini-series will follow up on the events of the closing episodes of Torchwood
Season 2, and Doctor Who Season 4 (which features Jack, Gwen & Ianto) - it was suggested in
the final episodes of Who that Mickey Smith & Martha Jones would be joining Torchwood, but that
seems less and less likely, given the info that is pouring in every day - though it does seem that this
was the original intent of the producers. It's also been rumored that this mini-series will be a follow-
up to last season's "Sleeper" episode...which would rock! ;-0)
The mini-series began pre-production on June 15, 2008. It will still be aimed towards a more adult
audience, though there will be no sex scenes in this mini. This info is from Torchwood Magazine #7.
Principal Photography begins August 18, 2008. This & the title were revealed in Torchwood
Magazine #8. Euros Lyn was also confirmed to be the director of all 5 installments. And it is
said to be aimed a Spring 2009 airdate...so less than a year from now. :-0)
