The Classic Trek feature films are what really saved the Star Trek Franchise and allowed for the first spin-off series "Star Trek: The Next Generation".  "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was actually originally intended as a tv series pilot episode, but became a full fledged movie after the theatrical success of Star Wars, Episode IV.  The first installment of the Star Trek movie series is wondrous, but...boring; it doesn't have the feel of the Original Series; more like a reunion movie than an actual installment of the series.  "The Wrath of Khan" is where things kicked into high gear, with a follow-up to the Original Series episode "Space Seed"; a great villain, great score music, real emotion, and the death of Spock brings me to tears at every viewing.  "Star Trek III: The Search For Spock", & "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" completed a trilogy of films beginning with "Wrath", which was never replicated by further installments.  "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" has a lame plot and is barely watchable, and makes one look fondly on "The Motion Picture", but still yields some fantastic character moments.  "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" passes the torch to future generations in style; while still not up to par with "Wrath of Khan" it does manage to close the series with far more dignity than "The Final Frontier" and serves as the best possible coda to the trilogy of II, III & IV; giving closure to Classic Trek in a way that would elude The Next Generation.
