HERCULES & XENA
-Where They Came From-
Hercules began as a series of 5 television movies in the year 1994. These movies were very successful & a 1995 television series, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys soon followed.
During the final episodes of Herc's 1st season he met up with the fearsome Warrior Princess, Xena. Xena was to be killed during her redemption arc but the writers decided she was too complicated a character to do away with & decided to keep her alive & to spin her off into her own series.
Xena: Warrior Princess arrived the following season & soon became more popular than the series that spawned it; though crossovers were popular as well.
There was soon an animated movie:
Hercules & Xena: The Battle For Mount Olympus,
which is considered an absolute failure by many, while I like to think of it as just one more quirky episode for our pantheon of characters. The animation is carbon-dated compared to current animation trends, but this only endears it to me more - sort of like seeing our heroes in Scooby Doo land; lol.
There was still yet another spin-off series waiting in the wings: Young Hercules began it's 52 episode run in 1998. The series was aimed at young people but did not write off the series' that preceded it & guest starred many of the characters that Xena & the adult Hercules would one day face. Also - Hercules: The Legendary Journeys did a series of flashback episodes which intrinsically linked the spin off series with it's parent. As a final connection, Lilith, one of the original characters from Young Hercules was featured in 2 episodes of Hercules, adding closure to stories told on the cancelled series.
